What to do When You Need Money Fast

A new poll from Bloomberg found that only 48% of Americans can handle an emergency expense such as a ticket, medical emergency, or some other crisis that is more than $100 without stressing about it. If you need a bit of extra green in a hurry, you are not alone. It is not uncommon to feel like you are under pressure when you need money but have limited options regarding how to get it. These options might include things like finding money in little known ways, doing odd jobs, or selling items. While these methods might not be good for the long term, they can also be your best option when you need money quickly.

Let’s take a quick peek at some of the ways to get your hands on money (legally) in a hurry.

Loans

When you need money quick, you might not be able to go to a traditional financial institution such as a bank if you only need a small amount or if you have poor or no credit. That doesn’t necessarily preclude you from getting a loan though. You might consider getting a quick payday alternative loan. These are relatively easy to qualify for – especially considering the hoops you would have to jump through to get a loan at a bank. All you need to have is your valid social security number, a place of employment that the lending institution can verify, and a bank account that is active. Once you have provided those things you might be approved for your small loan and you can have access to the funds in as little as a single business day after you have been approved.

Family and Friends

Requesting money from good friends and family is something that should only be done in a worst case scenario. This is because it can generate bad feelings on both sides. If you do decide to go this route, you need to make sure to put your agreement in writing. You need to be able to pay back what you borrowed either according to the terms agreed upon or faster. This is one thing that has the potential to wreck relationships. That being said, being able to create intimacy on a financial level with your friends and or family is something that might be good to do so that you will feel comfortable having conversations about money with them. This intimacy might even lead to a stronger relationship.

Sell It

One fast way to make a bit of money is to sell some of the things you have that you no longer need or want. Take a look around your home and find things that might bring a few bucks. This might include things like:

  • Unused gift cars – these can be sold for cash on a variety of websites or even at Coinstar kiosks.
  • Crafts
  • Jewelry
  • Video games
  • Smartphones
  • Electronics
  • Collectible toys
  • Musical instruments
  • Books

You might concentrate on selling these things to people you know, online, or in person – such as at a yard sale. Some of the options you have for places to sell your stuff include:

  • Consignment shops
  • Pawn shops
  • Classified ads and even Craigslist
  • eBay
  • 5Miles or LetGo
  • Flea markets

Deciding on a price for your stuff might be a bit difficult, but you will be more likely to sell the items quickly if you price them at around half of what they might expect to pay for the same items in a store. Try to stay away from deeply discounting your stuff unless you need the money yesterday.

Scavenge and Sell

If you happen to have a metal detector, you might go on a scavenger hunt with it. Good places to look for lost valuables include the beach, parks, and even shopping areas. You never know what you might find. It might be a good day and you will be able to find jewelry, money, or other valuables. Then again, you might not find anything worth anything at all. While this method isn’t 100% reliable, you might be able to get lucky and find one or more things that you will be able to turn into a bit of quick cash.
